Winnipeg to Larchwood, IAOur adventure begins today as we head South with a stop at Emerson Duty-Free. Continue on through Fargo with a break for lunch and on to Grand Falls Casino & Golf Resort for the night.
Larchwood to Deadwood, S.D.Today’s journey will take us to Deadwood, but first with stops at the World’s only Corn Palace in Mitchell and the World’s largest Drug Store, Wall Drug. A classic store from 1936 known for its quirky roadside signs and free water. We arrive in the unique town of Deadwood where thick forests blanket its hillsides. The entire city is a national historic landmark, with its extensive Victorian architecture, turn-of-the-century street lamps, and where gold, gambling, and gunpowder were once the order of the day. Our next four nights will be spent here at Cadillac Jack’s Gaming Resort.
Deadwood AreaToday we enjoy a scenic drive, starting with Spearfish Canyon, a photographer's dream with waterfalls, great stands of ponderosa pines and spruce. We cross into the state of Wyoming for a visit and guided tour of Vore Buffalo Jump an archeological site. A sinkhole, formed where gypsum soil was eroded, leaving a steep-sided pit about 40 feet deep and 200 feet in diameter. Next, we view the country’s first national monument, Devils Tower. While it was made famous as the backdrop in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the tower is sacred to many Northern Plains tribes. You’ll have time to explore the trails that surround the one-mile circumference of this jaw-dropping geologic formation.
Deadwood - Free DayThe day is yours to explore Historic Deadwood. Your tour director will have several suggestions on how you can spend your day.
Deadwood AreaToday we enjoy breakfast out at Fort Hays, site of the Oscar award winning movie set, Dances with Wolves. Walk along the boardwalk and browse the film set & South Dakota Film Museum. See the original buildings used in this popular Wild West movie. Next, we take a drive through South Dakota’s largest park, Custer State Park. We travel the Wildlife Loop Road which twists and turns its way through the prairie and ponderosa pine-studded hills which harbor many of the park's wildlife species. On most days, you can come face to face with the number one inhabitant of the park, 1,350 free roaming buffalo. Afterward, we visit the breathtaking Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Carved on the face of a mountain more than a thousand feet overhead features the monumental likenesses of four U.S. presidents – Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. Stroll along the Presidential Trail, providing the closest access to the iconic sculpture.
Deadwood to Sioux Falls, SDGet your cameras ready as we travel east today with a picturesque scenic drive through the amazing Badlands National Park, some of the most spectacular scenery in the region. The Badlands Loop Road is a marvel of vibrant colors and rock formations.
Sioux Falls to Winnipeg, MBHomeward bound today our first stop will be in Watertown at the Terry Redlin Art Center.
